What is CEND?

The Center of Excellence for Neurodegenerative Diseases of the University of Milan (CEND), acknowledged in 2001 by the Italian Ministry for University and Scientific and Techological Research (now MIUR), is an interdepartmental and multidisciplinary center born to pursue excellence in research on the molecular bases of neurodegenerative diseases.

By forcing cooperation among laboratories which are far from each other, both physically and culturally, but share common research interests, CEND launched a new way of making research, in which reseachers realize their efforts, driven by common objectives, working at their original lab, located at one of the affiliated Departments (Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry, Medical Pharmacology, Toxicology and Chemotherapy, Animal Pathology, Pharmacological Sciences, Neurological Sciences) and Institutes (Endocrinology, General Pathology) of the University of Milan.

Core laboratories support the research activities of all CEND members, ensuring maintainance, improvement, and spreading of rapidly-evolving biomedical investigation techniques. In addition, core labs participate in the training of students attending the center laboratories, help to further share interests among labs, and stimulate the creation of new collaboration projects.

Moreover, CEND has always provided its members with a smart programme of continuous education, through the organization of national and international meetings and of a series of events to disseminate the activities of the center to the general public.
