INTRODUCTION

The Ph.D. School in Biological and Molecular Sciences of the University of Milano has been created in 2005. It derives from the aggregation of three previous Research Doctorate Programs present in the University (the Doctorate in Genetics and Biomolecular Sciences, the Doctorate in Cellular and Molecular Biology and the Doctorate in Plant Biology) and it is now organized as a typical U.S. or European Ph.D. School.

The School includes four major Research Areas:

1. Molecular and Biophysical Analysis of Biological Structures;

2. Control of Gene Expression in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes;

3. Functional Genomics, Bioinformatics and System Biology;

4. Molecular Mechanisms Controlling Cell Proliferation and Degeneration, Differentiation and Development.

The above Research Areas corresponds to the European Research Council (ERC) Life Sciences Areas LS1, LS2, LS3,LS5, LS8, LS9.

The Departments of the University of Milano guesting the Ph.D. students and providing the space and instruments to perform the research programs are the  Department of Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology (http://www.sbb.unimi.it/), the Department of Biology (http://www.biodip.unimi.it/) and the Department of Genetics and Biology for the Medical Sciences (http://www.dibiogen.unimi.it/).

For addional informations contact:

Director of the Ph. D. School: Prof. Gianni Dehò (gianni.deho@unimi.it), tel. +39 02 50315019 Department of Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology.

Secretary of the Ph.D. School: Sig.ra Margherita Russo (margherita.russo@unimi.it), tel. +39 02 50315053.

Italian Ph.D. School and Universities or Research Centers from other Countries can establish collaborative agreements with the School of Biological and Molecular Sciences to obtain Joint Degrees or to carry on other types of scientific and training collaborations.

Presently, collaborative agreements are active with:

-  Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Studies, New York University, USA;

-  EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory), Heidelberg, Germany;

-  Paracelsus Medizinische Privatuniversität, Salzburg, Austria;

-  Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale per lo Studio e la Cura dei Tumori, Milano;

-  IBBA  CNR  (Istituto di Biologia e Biotecnologia Agraria del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche), Milano;

-  Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico C. Besta, Milano.
