Leipzig

logo_leipzigUniversität Leipzig was founded in 1409 making it one of the oldest universities in Germany. Consisting of 14 faculties with 128 institutes, it enables over 35,000 people to research and study. Crossing boundaries of traditional academic disciplines, international collaboration, networking with non-university research institutes and business are not just traditions of the University but are also the basis of its academic excellence. The Institute of Public Finance und Public Management obeys these principles. Therefore research and teaching are theory-based and practice-oriented. In the field of research there is a lot of experience and knowledge in acquisition and operation of third-party research funding and projects.

The Institute has very close contact to high-level European, national and local practitioners especially of public organizations and state-owned enterprises; as well as special and long-standing scientific expertise in the field of Service of general interest (SGEI). Studies and papers concerning all aspects of public services e.g. financing, governance and management are published frequently. In this context the institute consists of two centres of expertise: The Competence Centre of Public Economy, Infrastructure and SGI and the Competence Centre Saxony for Public-Private-Partnership. In both, there is an intensive exchange of information and interaction between mostly national academics, practitioners and politicians. With reference to the evaluation of reports to the liberalisation and privatisation process, members of the Institute take also part in hearings by EU and national authorities and Trade Unions like CESI.

In the field of teaching applied science also plays a key role. To provide a high standard of teaching lectures and courses use new methods like Service Learning as well as a high-quality range of roundtables and discussions with top-class experts. Currently the Institute employs more than 17 people including five professors, four post-docs and nine doctoral candidates.
