NEURALSTEM and NEUROGENE LAB

NEURALSTEM LAB

In our laboratory, we pursue the development of new cellular and molecular therapies for the treatment of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases in particular Motor Neuron Diseases like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Our research is based on three interlocking areas of investigation: the basic biology of stem cell cell programming and reprogramming, the investigation of molecular modification of disease pathogenetic events as well as the application of these strategies to the realization of new effective therapies for patients.

We study both the differentiation of stem cells into the neural lineage and the reprogramming of adult differentiated cell types, such as skin fibroblasts, into either pluripotent stem cells or cells of therapeutic interest such as motor neurons. We investigate also new molecular approaches as a therapy for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. Our research is focused not only on basic research but also on developing experimental approaches in in vivo models of motor neuron diseases.

The particular position of our Lab at the interface between clinical medicine and research provides us a unique platform for conducting further innovative translational research that can advance therapy for neurological diseases.
