Mission
Scientific research is a team activity, with no
boundaries; it must be carried out without preconceptions and
nationalisms. Scientific research must be conscious of economical
and enviromental
implications but always free of business constraints.
Intellectual property has to be
protected but at the same time no hurdle should be posed to the
circulation of knowledge.

PhD Program in "Food Science, Technology and Biotechnology"
The Food Science, Technology, and Biotechnology PhD program started in the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Milan in 1985. The general aim of these doctoral studies is to offer an educational route towards scientific research in a sector so relevant for the health and the well-being of consumers. In this frame, the innovations in product and processing, must be combined with safety, security and quality issues, as well as with the safeguard of both food tipicity and environment protection. Therefore, very complex scenarios have to be faced and well educated experts in this area are extremely needed. Consequently, the Board of our PhD program include Professors qualified in different areas, from human nutrition to food technology, from applied microbiology to food chemistry. Under their guidance is really possible to advance in scientific research concerning the different fields of knowledge of Food Science, Technology and Biotechnology. Some of the main topics approached in the PhD projects are detailed in the section “Research Topics” of this web site.
The PhD program in Food Science, Technology and Biotechnology belongs to the Graduate School “Molecular Science and Biotechnology of Plant, Food and Environmental”, together with two other programs: Pesticide sciences and Plant Biology and Production. The PhD program follows the rules and the regulations established by the University of Milan for this kind of studies and it is mainly based on the specific research activities performed by the students within the laboratories where they are enrolled. The PhD students are also invited to follow seminars, regular courses and to attend pertinent congresses and conferences.
Since 1995, a coordination committee among the 24 Italian programs of PhD studies in Food Science and Technology, has been established. The aim of this national network is to offer to the students opportunities of exchange their experiences and share knowledge. Each year in September, and in a different town, a workshop on the “Developments in the Italian PhD Research in Food Science and Technology” is held where all the students have to present their work by means of a poster or with an oral presentation, depending on the year of the course.
