GREENWAYS DEFINITION

Taking in account the work of J. Fabos and J. Ahern end According to the 1st article of the Italian Greenways Association Statute, "Greenways are systems or networks of connected lands that are protected, managed or developed to provide ecological, recreational and historical/cultural benefits".

From the mobility point of view, greenways are a system of routes, dedicated to a non-motorised traffic, connecting people with landscape resources (natural, historical, cultural, etc.) and the "centres of life" (e.g. municipal offices, sport and recreational facilities, etc.), both in the urban areas and in the countryside.

 Other Greenways definitions

  • A linear open space established along either a natural corridor, such as a riverfront, stream valley, or ridgeline, or overland along a railroad right-of-way converted to recreational use, a canal, a scenic road, or other route.
       

  • Any natural or landscaped course for pedestrian or bicycle passage.
       

  • An open-space connector linking parks, nature reserves, cultural features, or historic sites with each other and with populated areas.
       

  • Locally, certain strip or linear parks designated as parkway or greenbelt.
