aston_2COST CM1001 Workshop on

Spectrometry Analysis of Protein Oxidation

School of Life & Health Sciences, Aston University, Birmingham, UK

Monday 1st to Friday 5th July, 2013

The 1st Aston Workshop on Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Protein Oxidation was held in Aston University, Birmingham, UK, from the 1st to 5th July 2013. It was organized by Dr Corinne Spickett, with help from Profs Andy Pitt and Helen Griffiths, and we were delighted to welcome Dr Maria Fedorova from Leipzig University, and Prof Giancarlo Aldini and Dr Mara Colzani from the University of Milan as teachers on the course. There were 24 young participants from all over Europe: 11 from the COST Action CM1001, 4 from the COST Action BM1203 [EU-ROS], 3 from the Proxomics Group at Imperial College London, 1 from the University of Strathclyde, and 5 from Aston University.  The participants came from a diverse range of scientific backgrounds, but interacted very well in all the sessions. As well as lectures on theoretical aspects of mass spectrometry, proteomics and protein oxidation, there were group discussions, data analysis sessions, instrument demonstrations and practical sessions. Dr Milla Neffling, an applications specialist from ABSciex, was on hand to talk about advanced aspects of mass spectrometry and help with data handling. On the last day, the workshop concluded with an external lecture on the applications of mass spectrometry in studying adverse drug reactions, which was given jointly by Dr Neil Kitteringham and Dr Roz Jenkins from the University of Liverpool. Despite the very busy scientific programme, we manage to fit in a welcome reception and dinner, a canal boat trip to illustrate the industrial heritage of Birmingham, and a final workshop dinner. We would like to thank the major sponsors of the Workshop: COST Actions CM1001 and BM1203 and ABSciex; also our minor sponsors ThermoFisher Scientific, StarLabs and Eppendorf.
